Cheap Whirlwind Barbarian build guide – Diablo 2 Resurrected

While most people choose to start the new ladder as a Sorceress to get straight to magic finding, this Barbarian build guide will be a breath of fresh air. You’ll also be loved in Diablo 2 Resurrected as you’ll be one of the few tanks that’s vastly needed to clear acts. This Barbarian build guide is cheap, effective, and lets you clear pretty much any mob in the game and breeze through bosses thanks to its crushing blow. Let’s jump right into it.

Barbarian Build Guide

Skill Points

  • Bash [1] – A prerequisite for other skills.
  • Leap [1] – A prerequisite for other skills but also lets you bypass some obstacles similar to teleport.

  • Natural Resistance [1] – A prerequisite for other skills but also very helpful to make sure you’re max resistance.
  • Battle Command [1] – Gives an extra skill point but only increases duration of it with higher level, so no need to put multiple points in this.
  • Berserk [1] – Converts your damage into magical which is useful against any physical immunes.
  • Improve Speed [1] – Simply makes you run/walk faster which is nice since you don’t have a teleport.
  • Mace Mastery [20] – Your main weapon in this build is considered a mace.
  • Whirlwind [20] – This will be your main attack skill.
  • Battle Orders [20] – Gives a massive life and mana boost to yourself and your team.
  • Shout [20] – Increases the defense of yourself and your teammates.
  • Iron Skin – All of your remaining points should go into this to raise your defense.

Stat Points

  • Dexterity – You won’t be wielding a shield so don’t need any dexterity.
  • Vitality – All remaining points should be in here. You receive 4 points of life per Vitality added.

Whirlwind Barbarian Gear

Since we’re looking to keep this build cheap but effective, we’ll be equipping the full Immortal King’s set which will grant the following bonuses:

Immortal King’s Partial Set Bonuses:
+50 To Attack Rating (2 Items)
Additional +75 To Attack Rating (3 Items)
Additional +125 To Attack Rating (4 Items)
Additional +200 To Attack Rating (5 Items)

Immortal King’s Complete Set Bonus:
+3 To Barbarian Skill Levels
+450 To Attack Rating
+150 To Life
All Resistances +50
Magic Damage Reduced By 10

  • Helmet – Immortal King’s Avenger Guard.
  • Weapon – Immortal King’s Stone Crusher. This provides a huge amount of crushing blow which makes it so monsters lose a certain percentage of life relative to their maximum life. Fantastic for killing bosses. It also has 2 open sockets so you can add Shael runes or 2 15 IAS Jewels so you can reach the last speed breakpoint for Whirlwind.
  • Armor – Immortal King’s Sacred Armor.
  • Belt – Immortal King’s War Belt.
  • Gloves – Immortal King’s War Gauntlets.
  • Boots – Immortal King’s War Boots.
  • Amulet – Highlord’s Wrath or Metalgrid.
  • Rings – Two Ravenfrosts or one Raven and a Bul-Kathos Wedding Band.
  • Offhand – Two +3 Warcry weapons.

Mercenary

You’ll want an Act 2 offensive mercenary from Nightmare mode which will provide the Might aura. This adds 200% enhanced damage. Equip him with an ethereal Reaper’s Toll which gives a high chance for him to cast Decrepify. Armor can be a Shaftstop, Fortitude, Treachery, or Duriel’s Shell. The helmet can be Andariel’s Visage or Vampire Gaze. As with all Mercenary items, ethereal is the best option.

Best Whirlwind Starting Gear

As with any character build, you most likely won’t have all of the items required if you’re just starting out. Below are some good options for easily acquirable low level gear.

  • Sigon’s Set
  • Eye of Etlich amulet
  • Life and Mana leech rings like Manald Heal or a rare ring.
  • Death’s set for belt and gloves (or Bloodfist gloves).
  • Twitchthroe armor
  • Aldur’s weapon or Steeldriver Maul
